frontrunner wasn't there... but the candidates take shots at him anyway. the republicans face off for the last time before caucuses. plus...caucus class. what you need to know before heading out monday night. and...a church gets hit by mother nature....but is counting its blessings here's a live look at our good morning it's 6 a-m -- today is . good morning, i'm ally crutcher. and i'm jerry gallagher. storm track seven meteorologist is here now with your storm track seven forecast. we are in for another day with a partly to mostly cloudy sky across eastern iowa. temperatures will warm into the an isolated rain or snow shower far north, it will be mostly

there could be some minor snow we are still tracking the potential for a large storm to wednesday. because this system is still 4 to 5 days out, and the storm is still out in the major winter storm will be affecting the midwest, and there will be several inches of snow and a lot of wind. wind gusts affects will be with us through wednesday. because this system is still 4 to 5 days out, and the storm is still out in the pacific ocean, computer model guidance has been fluctuating. bottom line: a major winter storm will be affecting the midwest, and there will be upwards of 45 mph. we begin this hour with the countdown to caucus.
6:02 am
last night many of the g-o-p canddiates squared off in a debate on the fox news channel.. the final showdown before the caucuses. the elephant not in the room -- donald trump...some of the candidates making joking references to trump during the evnt. but they moved on quickly.. the most common attacks happening between senators ted cruz and marco rubio... the truth is, ted, throughout worked for george w. bush's campaigns... (booing)" "we both made the identical promises. but when we came to washington, we made a different choice. marco made the choice to go because he thought it was politically advantageous." trump refused to participate last night because of a fued with fox news anchor megan kelly instead, trump held his own event for veterans just a few miles million dollars for veterans. "donald trump another great builder in new york, now a action, i refuse to be called a politician. donald trump gave 1
6:03 am
two other republican candidates...rick santorum and mike huckabee... joined trump on stage. they did not qualify for the main debate which was going on at the same time. we're down to the wire. the first test to decide our next president happens monday night inside lunch rooms and libraries. right now, the candidates are organizing and hoping to catch fire at the end. voters are organizing themselves -- and some have questions about the process. "wow!" "well, whoa! wow!" "trump, trump, trump" it's almost time for the hand shaking and speech making to end. 315 days after the first major candidate announced a run for the white house, the first night in iowa. "we're making a big decision."
6:04 am
the republican field is crowded - and the democratic race is much more of a race than most expected. caucus-goers have a lot to sift through - and for some - it starts with the rules. "it couldn't get much more complicated than it is now." some people have a different description: "it's crazy the system of yours. it's nuts." democrats meet in their precincts monday night. it's like a neighborhood meeting. it starts at 7 o'clock sharp so if you need to register, you have to do it beforehand. from there, they divide up into preference groups, but if one candidate fails to be considered viable, which typically means - getting 15-percent - they have to convince others to join their group or disband and align with someone else. that's a scenario that could play out - and could help swing the final results. after that, delegates are awarded to help determine the winner. using a formula that. well, we'll just say is not a simple head count. so what about the gop? it coverage from 1988.
6:05 am
little easier than the democrats. after signing in and finding their precinct, they waste little time getting down to business." "from here, the caucus process is a simple one. for the republicans, it's time to take a poll of the voters. a secret ballot to determine the winner. of course, that doesn't mean everything will run smoothly." "pray it isn't snowing like it was that one year. it was incredible." thanks to the 2012 caucuses, they also might be praying for accuracy. "we had a little problem last time around (laughs) but it all worked out in the process, but it's a fun night and an interesting night. and an educational night." so what can we expect monday night? "i'm thinking three tickets and right now, it's looking like the third ticket is the most likely the nominee." kwwl political analyst chris larimer sizes up the two republicans who've been leading the field in iowa.
6:06 am
one goes on to be the nominee." "that third ticket out of iowa could be the golden ticket." which has happened before. "winning the iowa caucus is a plus in the system, but it's not a guarantee of anything." what it can do is build - or kill momentum - for a campaign. and turnout is always a key. dr. larimer predicts about 140,000. "but if that gets over 150, 160,000, then that's to the benefit of trump and sanders." since the 1970s when iowa moved front and center to be first in the nation, the caucuses have helped thin the herd. there's been a lot of handwringing across the country about iowa in the front seat, but anyone who questions the legitimacy of the iowa caucuses -- consider this: in 1980, george bush surprised everyone by beating ronald reagan in iowa. bush's performance paved the way for him to become vice president under reagan. and eventually president. without his first place finish in 1980 in iowa, it's possible there would've been no bush dynasty. and also no barack obama in the
6:07 am
house. the illinois senator won iowa in 2008 - with a record turnout - and kept on rolling. "it's an interesting evening and there will be surprises." but from who, what. or even where? it's almost time to piece together the puzzle iowans create every four years. many of you have asked where you need to go monday night to caucus. we've got a link on our website with information -- so you can find your precinct. a political hotspot will soon have a new owner. the iconic hamburg inn no. 2 in iowa city has been in the panther family for decades -- but it's going to be switching hands as the current owner retires. the restraunt has had many politicians through its doors over the years...known for their (david panther/ owner of hamburg inn no. 2) "they have be the same staff same, my come in and build on the success that we've had." panther plans to spend his

the tornado hit right in their courtyard. you can see patio furniture being lifted in the air and the winds nearly blowing a delivery man away. church members say the church suffered roof damage... "i truly believe the lord is with us. we are just ok. we needed to clean up this yard anyway." utility crews say more than 700 people lost power. no one was hurt. the so-called affluenza teen is back on u-s soil. he'll be in court today. ethan couch is being held in a north texas juvenile detention center. the teen and his mother became the focus of an international search after he missed a mandatory probation meeting. couch was put on probation after killing four people in a drunk driving accident three years ago. the-f-b-i releases video of the traffic stop which led to the deadly shooting of an oregon protestor. we will not be showing the shooting this morning. an f-b-i plane was overhead during the time. authorities say the suspect tried to drive around a roadblock, then got stuck in snow. he got out of the car and
